If you’ve spent any time in Kempsey, you’ll know The Talbot – it’s the biggest pub in the village, proudly holding court on the main road like a big friendly Labrador that’s maybe had a few too many biscuits over the years. It’s a familiar spot, a bit rough around the edges, but still ours.
About 18 months ago, Martin took over as landlord, stepping behind the bar with a mission to bring The Talbot back to its roots as a proper village pub. And while things have been a bit quiet since then – OK, very quiet there’s a certain charm in that too. A pint, a peaceful corner, and a chat if you want one. No fuss, no frills.
That said, the atmosphere has been… let’s say “gentle.” The food? Marstons classic pub fare, straight from the freezer to your fork. Familiar. Safe. Beige. And yes, the prices have crept up a bit, but to be fair, that’s the story everywhere at the moment.
The pub itself could do with a bit of TLC – a fresh coat of paint here, a tidy-up there – but if you squint a bit and have a cider in hand, it still feels like home. Marstons Pub Co. may not be investing like they used to, but we live in hope that The Talbot gets the love it deserves.
But wait – change is afoot!
For the first time in 18 months, The Talbot is throwing an outdoor event! Sunday 4th May, we’re being treated to The Talbot Cider Festival – a full day of live music, cold drinks, and good company.
Martin’s been talking about “ramping up” the place – ramping up the team, ramping up the food (there’s a new pizza menu!), and now ramping up the vibes with a proper village knees-up. Sure, there’s a Domino’s just down the road, but these pizzas come with a pint and some personality.
So what’s on?
We’re thrilled to welcome back the brilliant Jamie Knight with his acoustic jukebox stylings, and the fantastic Delray Rockets, who’ll be bringing rhythm, energy, and a lot of toe-tapping to the garden stage. The cider will be cold, the menu prices will be friendlier, and there’ll be plenty of ice cream for the little ones too.
It’s shaping up to be a lovely day, and whether you’re a Talbot regular or haven’t popped in for a while, this is the perfect excuse to come say hello.
So here’s to a bit of fun, a bit of music, and a lot of cider. See you at The Talbot biggest pub in the village, and maybe, just maybe, on the rise again.
