St Mary’s Church in Kempsey is celebrating a significant boost as the local bell‑ringing team receives vital funding for replacement ropes. Dating back to the 17th Century, the church’s bells have a rich history – but the bell‑rope worn out over years of use were in desperate need of renewal.
Thanks to Worcestershire County Councillor Martin Allen, £800 from his annual £10,000 community fund has been allocated to support the bell‑ringers in preserving this proud tradition .
Councillor Allen said:
“I understand that the upkeep of such a worthwhile historic part of our history is not cheap, and I am delighted to have provided the funding to replace the worn-out ropes.”
He added that maintaining these local customs helps to reinforce community character and connection ().
Tower captain Mike Harrison also commented:
“Anyone who is interested in learning a new skill would be warmly welcome. Visitors with advanced notice can pop up the tower on Thursday evenings from 19:30 BST to watch a practice session or learn about how to join.”
The bell‑ringers are also continuing to fundraise for essential upkeep and repairs to keep the bells in working order for generations to come .
