No Stand-Alone Lights Switch-On – Local Businesses Disappointed

Worcester City Council has confirmed that there will be no separate Christmas lights switch-on event this year, leaving many city-centre traders disappointed and worried about missing the usual early-season boost in footfall.

Rising costs, logistical pressures, and safety considerations have all been cited as reasons for cancelling the traditional launch night. The lights will still be turned on – but quietly, without the live stage, music, or the big family gathering that normally kicks off Worcester’s festive season.

What this means locally:

  • Businesses across the wider area, including Kempsey, often benefit from the excitement the switch-on generates – without it, the early festive buzz may feel more muted.
  • Independent shops, cafés and local makers may miss out on the usual surge in visitors.
  • Residents are encouraged to continue supporting local traders and keep the festive spirit alive at a community level.

And as Worcester steps back from a full switch-on celebration, we can’t help but wonder what Kempsey Parish Council is planning for our village this year – if anything at all. A little festive sparkle would certainly go a long way.

We’ll share updates as soon as lights, dates or any local plans are confirmed.
