Walking in Kempsey

Hey there, fellow nature lovers! If you’re lucky enough to live in Kempsey, you already know how absolutely stunning this place is. Not only do we have breathtaking views of rolling hills, commons, and the River Severn, but we’ve also got around 60 miles of footpaths and bridleways right here on our doorstep. Whether you’re into a gentle stroll or a proper trek, there’s a path for every walker!

From the Hams (those picturesque flood meadows) to the winding lanes along the River Severn, and across fields and pastureland, our parish is a walking paradise. And if you’re looking for that perfect backdrop for your Instagram story, we’ve got it all – the Malvern HillsBredon HillAbberley Hills, the Clock Tower, and even the Clent Hills on a clear day.

But the beauty of our walks goes beyond just the views – they’re steeped in history! Some of our paths, like the Roman Road and the Saltway, have been trodden by villagers for centuries. Imagine walking in the footsteps of people from hundreds of years ago, including funeral processions heading to St. Mary’s Church. Pretty amazing, right?

Fun fact: The land where the M5 motorway now cuts through was once allotment land! Who knew the “grow your own” movement was such a thing back then? And don’t get us started on the sand and marl clay from Sandpits Lane and Marlbank – they were used for building roads in the past. The history is all around us, just waiting to be discovered!

Although the book Walks Around Kempsey (written by the wonderful Rachel Evans in the 1980s) still offers fantastic routes, some of the information is a bit outdated. But fear not! We’re working hard to re-open blocked paths so that every corner of our gorgeous village can be explored. And shout out to Lesley Cox, our fantastic Parish Paths Warden, who has made sure three walks are fully accessible, with more on the way!

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore our beautiful footpaths and bridleways. The more people walk these routes, the better they stay maintained. Plus, you’ll get to meet some of our local wildlife – from birds and insects to mammals and flowers – there’s always something new to see!

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Respect the local community – your actions affect people’s lives, so always be considerate.
  • Leave gates and property as you find them, and stick to the marked paths.
  • Leave no trace – take your litter home and keep our environment pristine.
  • Dogs on leads, please! Our furry friends are great companions, but they must be under control.
  • Plan ahead – always know where you’re going and keep an eye out for any local signs or advice.

So whether you’re a local or a visitor, grab your boots, pack some snacks, and hit the trails! The beauty of Kempsey is waiting for you.

Happy walking!
