Sale agreed on Walter de Cantelupe after two years of closure

There’s some good news for Kempsey as a sale has finally been agreed on the Walter de Cantelupe, after the historic village pub has stood closed for around two years.

The prominent Main Road building has been a familiar part of Kempsey for generations, and its closure has left a noticeable gap in the heart of the village.

After a lengthy period on the market, a sale has now been agreed, bringing fresh hope that the building could finally reopen and once again become an active part of village life.

There’s already plenty of conversation on social media about what could come next, with some residents suggesting the new owners should take the pub back to its original name, The Queens Head.

The building was known as the Queens Head long before it became the Walter de Cantelupe, and bringing back the historic name would certainly be a nod to its past.

While details about exactly what is planned haven’t yet been announced, it’s clear the new buyers have done their research into the building and its history, and there are encouraging signs that they’re looking to bring something special back to the village.

For many residents, though, it will simply be great to see some life back in the place. Two years is a long time for such a well-known village building to sit closed, particularly in such a prominent position on Main Road.
