Crackdown targets unlicensed ice cream vans in Worcester

A crackdown is being carried out on unlicensed ice cream vans and other street traders operating in Worcester, as authorities look to make sure businesses selling from the roadside are properly licensed.

Street trading rules apply to businesses selling goods or food in public areas, including mobile ice cream vans, food vans and other roadside traders.

Worcester City Council requires street traders operating in the city to hold the appropriate street trading licence. Trading without one is an offence and can result in a fine of up to £1,000.

Licensing and enforcement work in Worcester is carried out by Worcestershire Regulatory Services (WRS), which manages licensing functions on behalf of councils across Worcestershire.

The action comes as Worcester continues to review how street trading is managed across the city. Earlier this year, residents were invited to have their say on an updated Street Trading Policy covering how applications are assessed and the conditions traders must follow.

The council says street trading can provide a useful service to residents and visitors, but regulation is designed to ensure traders operate appropriately while protecting established businesses and local communities.

Ice cream vans are specifically classed as mobile street traders under the licensing system.

Although the latest action is focused on Worcester, street trading licensing is administered by WRS across Worcestershire, including neighbouring council areas.
