A Kempsey resident has contacted Kempsey.co.uk to raise concerns about vehicles being parked on pavements, particularly around the Lawnspool estate, and the impact this is having on people trying to use local footpaths safely.
The resident highlighted that when cars are parked partially or fully on pavements, pedestrians are often forced into the road to get around them.
While the concern was initially raised by a wheelchair user, the issue affects a much wider range of people throughout the village.
Parents pushing prams, young children walking to school, elderly residents, dog walkers, mobility scooter users, people with visual impairments, joggers and anyone simply trying to walk around the village can all find themselves having to step into the road when a pavement is blocked.
The resident told Kempsey.co.uk:
“Parking on pavements is putting children, wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs in danger, as they have to go round into the road to get past.”
They also described occasions where they had attempted to speak to drivers directly, only to be met with hostility.
“As a wheelchair user I have been shouted at by these people when asked to move the vehicle so I can get by, and nearly run into while trying to negotiate around the vehicle.”
For many residents, pavements provide a safe space away from moving traffic. When that route is obstructed, people can be left with little choice but to enter the carriageway, sometimes at locations where visibility is limited or traffic is passing close by.
As Kempsey continues to grow, parking pressures are becoming increasingly noticeable on some estates and residential roads. However, residents are being encouraged to think carefully about where they leave their vehicles and whether enough space remains for others to pass safely.
The Highway Code advises motorists not to park on the pavement unless signs specifically permit it. Even where parking restrictions are not in place, drivers are encouraged to consider the safety and accessibility of pedestrians before leaving their vehicle.
The resident hopes that raising awareness of the issue will encourage greater consideration from motorists before the situation escalates further.
Kempsey.co.uk is keen to hear from residents on both sides of the discussion. Have you experienced difficulties using pavements due to parked vehicles? Do you feel parking availability is becoming a growing problem in parts of the village?

After all, pavements are there for everyone – from toddlers taking their first steps to residents in their later years – and keeping them accessible benefits the whole community.
Editor’s Note: Kempsey.co.uk has not independently verified the incidents described above but is publishing the concerns raised by a local resident in the interests of community discussion and awareness.
