Severn Stoke flood defences set to finish ahead of schedule

Some welcome news for one of our neighbouring villages, as the long-awaited £5.2 million flood defence scheme at Severn Stoke is now expected to be completed ahead of schedule.

The Environment Agency says the recent dry weather has allowed contractors to make faster progress, with the new defences now expected to be in place by mid-October, rather than towards the end of the year.

The project includes a specially constructed clay flood embankment to the west of Severn Stoke, along with work around Ham Lane, designed to provide greater protection to homes and businesses which have repeatedly suffered from flooding from the River Severn.

Work finally began earlier this year following years of delays and funding difficulties, so the prospect of the scheme being completed early will be very welcome news for residents.

With communities including Kempsey, Severn Stoke and Upton-upon-Severn all knowing only too well the disruption the River Severn can cause, it is great to see another major flood protection project nearing completion.
