Kempsey Braces For Hottest Day Of The Year This Thursday

Residents across Kempsey are being urged to take precautions as forecasters predict Thursday could be the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures expected to reach around 34°C in the village during the afternoon.

The Met Office has issued heat warnings covering much of England, including the West Midlands, as a prolonged spell of hot weather continues across the country. Forecasters say Thursday is likely to be the peak of the current heatwave, with temperatures remaining well above average for June.

While many people will be looking forward to enjoying the sunshine, health officials are reminding residents that extreme heat can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness.

What Are The Risks?

Hot weather can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and, in more serious cases, heatstroke.

Those most at risk include older residents, young children, babies, people with existing health conditions and anyone working outdoors for extended periods.

The heat can also affect sleep quality, concentration and general wellbeing, particularly when overnight temperatures remain unusually high and homes struggle to cool down.

The Met Office has warned that prolonged periods of hot weather can place additional pressure on healthcare services and increase the risk of heat-related illness.

How To Stay Cool During The Heatwave

Residents are being encouraged to take simple steps to stay safe and comfortable during the hottest part of the week.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Keep curtains, blinds and windows closed on sun-facing sides of your home during the day to help keep indoor temperatures down.

If possible, avoid spending long periods outside between 11am and 4pm when temperatures are expected to be at their highest.

Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and seek shade whenever possible.

If you need to exercise or carry out physical work, try to do so early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

Residents are also encouraged to check in on elderly neighbours, relatives and friends who may need extra support during the hot weather.

Don’t Forget About Pets

The heat can be just as dangerous for our four-legged friends.

Dog owners are being advised to avoid walking their pets during the hottest part of the day. Pavements and roads can become extremely hot and may burn a dog’s paws.

Veterinary experts recommend walking dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.

Dogs should always have access to fresh drinking water and a cool, shaded area to rest.

Never Leave Children Or Pets In Cars

One of the most important safety messages during a heatwave is never to leave children or animals inside a parked vehicle.

Even with windows slightly open, temperatures inside a car can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.

Every year emergency services are called to incidents involving children and pets trapped in overheating vehicles, many of which could have been prevented.

Looking Ahead

Current forecasts suggest Thursday will be the hottest day of the week in Kempsey, with temperatures potentially reaching 32°C before gradually easing towards the weekend.

While many residents will be making the most of the sunshine, officials are urging everyone to enjoy the weather responsibly and take sensible precautions to stay safe.

As always, if you’re spending time outdoors, remember to stay hydrated, seek shade where possible and look out for family members, neighbours and pets who may be struggling in the heat.
