Veterans to Ride Local Buses Free from April 2026

Veterans and serving members of the armed forces across Worcestershire will soon be able to travel for free on local bus services, following a unanimous decision by Worcestershire County Council.

From 6 April 2026, eligible veterans and current service personnel will be entitled to free travel on commercial bus routes, in a move designed to recognise their service and improve access to essential transport. The new entitlement will mirror the existing concessionary bus pass scheme currently available to older residents.

A Unanimous Decision

The proposal received cross-party support at County Hall, reflecting broad agreement on the importance of supporting those who have served in the armed forces. The motion was backed unanimously, following campaigning and representations from local councillors and veterans’ advocates.

The announcement, shared with readers in the December/January edition of Kempsey Times, was particularly well received during the festive season – seen by many as a meaningful and practical gesture of thanks.

Why It Matters

For many veterans, access to reliable and affordable transport can make a real difference – helping with:

  • Getting to medical appointments
  • Staying connected with friends, family and community groups
  • Accessing shops, services and support networks

By removing the cost barrier, the scheme aims to reduce isolation and improve quality of life for those who have served.

What Happens Next?

The scheme is set to come into force in April 2026, with further details expected closer to the launch date, including:

  • How veterans and serving personnel can apply
  • What identification or documentation will be required
  • Which services are covered under the scheme
