Walk Kempsey

Kempsey Parish has around 60 miles of footpaths and bridleways, from the River Severn and the Hams to commons, farmland and old village routes.

Before you set off

Routes cross working countryside and conditions can change. Follow local signs and the Countryside Code, keep dogs under effective control around livestock, close gates and take extra care at road crossings. After heavy rain, river and common routes may be muddy or affected by flooding.

Severn Way & Napleton

A varied circular route following the River Severn before returning through Napleton and the village. Expect field paths, riverbank sections and several road crossings.

Start: St Mary’s Church, Church Street
Terrain: Riverside paths, fields, lanes and village paths

The route crosses the A38. River and field sections can become muddy or affected by wet weather.

Two Commons & Amazing Views

A circular walk linking Kempsey Common and Stonehall Common with wide views across the surrounding countryside.

Start: Kempsey Common car park area, end of Bestman’s Lane
Terrain: Common land, bridleways, lanes and field edges

The official guide warns the route can be wet, muddy and overgrown. Livestock may be present on Kempsey Common, so dogs should be kept under control.

Ashmoor Common

A countryside loop through Ashmoor Common, past The Nash and back via the Lower Ham.

Start: Lower Old Road South, near the A38 junction
Terrain: Wetland common, grassland, field paths and lanes

Ashmoor Common is wetland and can be muddy even in dry weather. The route also crosses the A38.

Pirton Castle

A circular countryside walk from Kempsey Common towards Pirton Castle, the Croome Court folly, before returning to the common.

Start: Kempsey Common parking area, Bestman’s Lane
Terrain: Common land, countryside paths and lanes

Country paths can be uneven and muddy. Take care around livestock and road sections.

Round the Parish

A broad circuit from Plovers Rise through Napleton, the Roman Road and Kempsey Common, returning across fields to the playing field.

Start: Plovers Rise Playing Field
Terrain: Playing field, green lanes, common land, fields and roads

Some sections cross common land where paths are informal. Field conditions vary with the weather.

There and back · Easy to moderate

Kempsey to St Peter’s

A practical countryside walk from Kempsey to St Peter’s Garden Centre using Brookend Lane, Holdings Lane and public footpaths.

Start: Brookend Lane at the A38
Terrain: Country lane, field paths and pavement

The official guide warns that the opening road section has no pavement. Take particular care on Brookend Lane.
